I think read this in high school or early college (EARLY '60S) and enjoyed it moderately. Now that I'm septuagenarian, with experience in speechwriting, writing legislation in Congress, and having a small mumber of nonfiction pieces written and published (as well as 23 years in the Army, during which I studied early warfare), I've greatly increased my estimate of the novel. It's an amazing alternate history effort -- better in my view even than Harry Turtledove (except for his "The Gauntlet"). Like many other authors, I think deCamp underestmates both the problems of the so-called ''Dark Ages" and their causes, but the excellence of the work makes those minor quibbles. This was literally a book I couldn't put down once I started it (to be honest, I had to put it down a few times to take care of personal matters, but I couldn't wait to pick it up again. I suggest the reader keep a military encyclopedia or PC close by if you're one of those who likes to check the veracity of the historical references. It's a fun, exciting, compelling and generally fast-moving piece of fiction. Enjoy!

I love this book. In Mussolii's Italy, professor is zapped back to very late Roman Empire, when the Goths basically rule. He has some adventures a la "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" but he does not always know how to bring in modern inventions, unlike Twain's Yankee. Can you make gunpowder out of raw materials? What would it really be like to be a modern man in those days? Lots of fun.
Well written, amusing in places, and a sensible exploration of what a person unexpectedly might be accomplish, and what he likely night not. Not only is this the progenitor of the whole alternative history genre, it's still a great story by today's standards.

I read this book, when I was a student 30 years ago, in translated text (Japanese). I understood the background history only vaguely at that time, so I read some books about Goths, Romans, etc., which really invoked interests in me.
As the electronic delivery has become ubiquitous recently, I started reading the original books, which used to be expensive.

Though the story was written in 1939, the stage is in 6th century, there's nothing out-of-date. I could enjoy the well-thought time-slipped adventurer's wit and struggle.
I also found that Martin finally decided not to introduce gun powder because there already had been more than enough weapons. It still holds.
Not s good as I remembered, but last read 40+ years ago. Interesting look back at alternate History beginnings.
excellent book of the "alternate history genre", and considered by many to be one of the fathers of this modern type of literature. like many early science fiction writers, this is one more of those "technology solves all" tales, but unlike others of this kind, this one works...
Lest Darkness Fall is an amusing, time-travel, alternative-history novel, written in 1939. Our hero, Martin Padway (soon to become Martinus Paduei), is an American archeologist who is visiting Italy, and is transported to sixth-century Gothic Italy, threatened by Justinian forces, Franks, and others. Martin's goal becomes to prevent the encroaching Dark Ages by using his knowledge of history and modern technology. He soon introduces the printing press and paper stock (putting out newspapers and books), double-entry bookkeeping (helping him secure bank loans), distilling of brandy (earning him lots of money), a telegraph system, and more modern military methods, and he also frees the serfs--all in his attempt to alter history. Much of this leads to a lot of funny dialogue and some suspense, as do his encounters with church and political officials, generals, kings, and aristocrats.

I enjoyed reading this novel. It does not seem dated, and it held my interest with its technological and historical developments, which were intended to prevent the fall of the late Western Roman Empire, as well as with its many comic characters.
