Once started reading Ms. Buck's work, I have been reading only her writings for a while now. She amazes me with her knowledge of humankind. She has taught me of myself through her insight into a women's life. I don't want to set them down, partly because she writes so well. It doesn't surprise me that she was awarded a Pulitzer prize for "The Good Earth".

Books by Pearl Buck are typically great. Because she draws so accurately in dialog and actions, she provides a cultural history of a people which Siberia is very important and not found elsewhere. Communist Premier Chou En Ali recognized her importance, unusual for a communist who prefer burying pasts. Of course, The Good Earth will always be my favorite.
I have yet to find a Pearl Buck book that wasn't worth reading. They are always so well written, such excellent well drawn characters. And such a compelling window into a time and place.
The book was so wonderful you actually could imagine what it was like to be back in China in those years. Pearl S buck shares one family's life and their drive to go back to their ancestral home. It is quite interesting how the culture and was so wise but so backward. It shows the influence of women in a culture and try to make them submissive.
Once again, Pearl Buck takes us into the Chinese experience "from the inside" in this account of the drama of a Chinese-American family published in 1949, just before the Communist victory in the civil war. It's a rare "snapshot" of how the situation looked to Chinese people both in China and America at that moment.
I love Pearl Bucks' writing and this is a great book, one of many she has written. I look at her library of selections almost daily for sale prices & am quick to snap up any book with reduced price. Hopefully I will be able to read them all!
As often in Pearl Buck's novels the story line starts off very simply and you might wonder where the story is. However before you realise it, you are hooked into another wonderful read which I find difficult to put down. Pearl Buck uses simplicity like it was gold and one's own imagination is guided into the essence of life until the last word. I always want them to go on and on. Her intimate knowledge of the Chinese culture is extraordinary and I feel as if I'm there in the shadows experiencing all that she is writing.
I loved The Good Earth by Pearl Buck, which was excellent, but this story and especially the writing seemed contrived and elementary. Like the writer’s heart was not into it. I was disappointed and stopped reading it after 3/4 way through. Even if a story isn’t captivating, if the writing is good I can still appreciate it. Sadly this wasn’t the case. Also the characters were a snooze fest. Zzzz
